Overview

The cesarean section is the most common, major surgery performed around the world. Remarkably, many hospitals do not include pelvic physiotherapy as part of their standard postpartum care following this abdominal procedure. In contrast to other major surgeries such as hernia repair, gallbladder surgery, and appendectomy, women recovering from cesarean sections exhibit significantly higher levels of activity involving newborn care and self-care.

Pelvic floor physiotherapists are uniquely positioned to provide crucial early post-operative care, facilitating patient recovery. Addressing major causes of preventable maternal mortality—postpartum hemorrhage, infection, and preeclampsia—physiotherapists play a pivotal role in minimizing complications and providing essential education for optimal recovery.

Inequities in care that impact maternal health provide unique opportunities for pelvic health physiotherapists to work upstream through initiatives that address contributing factors to this crisis around the world. In this exciting presentation from pelvic health solutions, pelvic health physiotherapists will learn how to leverage their expertise as rehabilitation consultants in maternity care settings. This knowledge can empower them to advocate effectively for enhanced maternal health worldwide.

If you're aspiring to enter healthcare consulting as a pelvic floor physiotherapist, this course equips you with essential tools, resources, and strategies to effectively advocate to researchers and policymakers for the integration of pelvic floor physiotherapy in acute care settings for patients recovering from cesarean sections.

Pelvic Health Solutions

Pelvic Health Solutions (PHS) is an evidence-based teaching company that aims to educate and empower physiotherapists, healthcare professionals, and everyday people about pelvic health.

PHS was founded in 2010 out of the need to develop pelvic health resources in Ontario at a time when it was an under-serviced health concern. PHS provides continuing education courses, mentoring, and clinical resources for a variety of practitioners with the goal of equipping them to deliver evidence-based, biopsychosocial assessment and treatment of pelvic health problems in our province and abroad.

Our company also exists as a way to connect people experiencing pelvic health concerns to pelvic health physiotherapists in their area. PHS has ultimately blossomed into a community of curious people who are committed to providing hope and healing to those who suffer from pelvic health issues.
