Overview
'Practical Pediatric Physiotherapy 0-6 months' is the first in a series of courses designed to break down and explore gross motor development in the first 6 months of life.
In this online pediatric physiotherapy course, we will look at normal development, as well as common conditions and delays that usually require physiotherapy intervention.
The aim of the course is to give the therapist a toolbox of information, interventions, and exercises to use in babies under 6 months of age.
This online course is designed to teach practical handling as well as give a greater understanding of the theory behind the choices of treatment.
The course will introduce a new pediatric therapy technique - MEDEK Therapy, and allow the therapist to learn and become familiar with some basic exercises from the technique.

Learning objectives
- To develop an understanding of normal gross motor development, from month to month, in the first 6 months of life (or corrected age, in the case of pre-term infants).
- To develop the knowledge of how to promote normal development and prevent delays.
- To understand common modern parenting trends that are resulting in delayed gross motor development, as well as the development of orthopaedic conditions caused by these trends.
- To diagnose, evaluate and treat various pediatric conditions that require early physiotherapy intervention and treatment.
- To learn new and unique treatment ideas appropriate for each month and stage of development.
- To understand the theory behind treatment choices.
- To expand the therapists' toolbox of exercises and interventions.
- To expand the therapists' resource list.
- To introduce the therapist to new and current exercise techniques including MEDEK Therapy.
Audience
This online pediatric physiotherapy course is open to Physiotherapists/Physical Therapists (PT) and Occupational Therapists (OT) working in pediatrics, or for those who want to learn more about gross motor development in pediatrics.
The course is ideal for new graduates in physiotherapy and occupational therapy who want a solid foundation in practical ideas and concepts to work with babies under 6 months. It will also help them understand the theory behind the exercises and concepts used to promote development.
The course is also good for more experienced PTs and OTs who want to expand and summarize their toolbox of ideas when working with this age group.

Jo-Anne Weltman graduated from Wits University in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1991 with a B.S.c. in Physiotherapy. Since then she has completed her MRSc. with research in Hip Dysplasia in Cerebral Palsy at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. She has taken numerous courses over the years including NDT, Conductive Education, Therapeutic Taping, Theratogs application, Therasuit Approach, TASES (NMES) and Spinal Stimulation, Vestibular-Ocular therapy, CVI, CME III, Reflex Integration, Sensory Integration, Orthopaedics in Children - to name a few.
Jo-Anne lives and works in Toronto, Canada. Her objective has always been to provide the best services to the children that she works with. so she opened S.M.I.L.E. Therapy for Kids a private practice that specializes in child development, to meet the demand for all areas of developmental and orthopaedic therapy in children. She continues to research and find the best treatments for all the children that are under her care and connects with specialists all over the world to achieve this.
Jo-Anne is an advocate for children with special needs and their families and works hard at trying to make changes in many areas to help these children as well as increasing their general level of care by educating those who will provide care to them. She is the CO-Founder or DMI Therapy, and teaches therapists all over the world.
